    CONDURSAL N523 is a solvent based stop-off paint providing excellent protection against pickup of nitrogen. It is suited even for extended gas nitriding processes up to 90 hours at temperatures ranging normally between 930 and 1095° F.

    CONDURSAL N523 dries quickly and its consistency is like that of and oil paint. Precise stop-off areas are easily achieved with CONDURSAL N523. If applied properly, CONDURSAL N523 coatings will not creep or run-off onto un-coated areas.

Instructions

CONDURSAL N523 Instructions For Use:
The areas to be coated with Condursal N523 have to be clean, i.e. free of dust, rust, oil and grease. This is normally achieved by either washing with alkaline solution or by vapor degreasing using chlorinated solvents.

Before applying Condursal N523, stir the contents of the tin thoroughly. It is also recommended to stir periodically during use to keep ingredients for settling to the bottom of the tin.

To apply the paste by painting, use flat clean brushes with soft bristles and make sure to get a coating of uniform thickness (.008 - .012").

Normally one coating is sufficient for effective insulation. Only in the case of critically shaped areas such as threads, edges or sharp radii a second coating transverse tot he edges is recommended.

For optimum insulation, it is necessary to make sure that the coating has been dried thoroughly before the parts are put into the furnace. Drying time for Condursal N523 normally ranges between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the temperature and atmospheric humidity.

Thinning of the paint, which can be necessary if it has become slightly thicker in the course of time due to evaporation of the solvent or if it shall be applied by spraying, should be achieved using small amounts of the "Special Thinner for Condursal N523". Never use chlorinated or other non-approved solvents. Avoid over thinning; it would impair the protective effect of Condursal N523.

To prevent thickening of the paint, the tins should be closed hermetically after use.

Special Notes:
Coated areas of the work pieces should not exceed 30% of the total surface of the batch to be nitrided because nitriding the atmosphere might be affected.
Residues of Condursal N523 are of a powdery appearance after the nitriding process. Due to gas turbulence in the furnace, some of it occasionally is removed from the surface of the components and settles in the retort. Since this might be the reason for soft spots on non coated areas later on, it is recommended to remove the powder (which is easy to detect because of its green color) from the retort after every nitriding cycle using a vacuum cleaner.
Removal of Residues:
After nitriding, the residues of Condursal N523 can be removed using a wire brush or by blasting.

Cleaning of brushes and other equipment:
To clean brushes or other equipment, which have come into contact with the paint, the "Special Thinner for Condursal N523" is suited as well as solvents such as Trichlorethylene, but by no means water.

Storage:
Condursal N523 should be stored in a dry cool place.
